CAR PARTS STORE : I posted my thoughts on this subject a few months ago. But they havenot changed so here they are again:---------------------------------- ---Mass merchandisers are profitable for one reason only. They "cherrypick" when selecting their inventory. Let us say you need a set ofsparkplugs for your car. If you go to a small auto parts store, theywill be able to sell you a set for almost any car except possibly aRolls Royce. A manufacturer of plugs usually has about 200 numbersin their inventory. WalMart also carries a line of spark plugs. But they only carry thefastest selling 15 numbers of the approximately 200 numbers that aremade. So they can sell these items cheaper. Your local parts storewill carry about 75% of these items and have 24 hour access to theothers.
CAR PARTS STORE : I've done some searches; I'm sure this has been coveredbefore somewhere! Please help us (school group)find a source for tracks for a vehicle. This willbe quite a bit larger (say 24 to 30 inches overalllength) than typical Lego etc etc. Any pointers appreciated! -- Regards, Terry King ...In The Woods In VermontFrom: ()Subject: Re: Where to get Tracks for robot vehicle?? One that I have seen used, but its hell to make, use bicycle or motorcyclechain, two runs per side. Affix (bolt or weld) aluminum or steel channelto individual links. Carefully build dual sprockets for the chain as drive and idler sprockets. CAR PARTS STORE : I saw a lovely long stretch of tank style tread in a local surplus storenot too long ago. It was maybe 6 feet long, with each link being aboutan inch and a half by 4 inches in some kind of chrome-plated steel.I have no idea what it was surplus from."Dennis Clark" wrote in message...============================== ======================================== ======There are several sources of replacement tread for those Tamiya RC Tanks, inplastic and metal. There was a discussion here not too long ago. I don'thave exact links, but I did a google search and got lots of hits. Some ofthe sites also sell drive gear and idler kits as well. There are several sources of replacement tread for those Tamiya RCTanks, inplastic and metal. There was a discussion here not too long ago. CAR PARTS STORE : The best way to get anything out of tamiya is call them, and ask them tosend you a fax with the order numbers and prices of the spare parts (tracks)for a specific tank.in my case they didn't response to e-mail.Except I was referring to aftermarket suppliers. IE: Not necessarilymanufactured by Tamiya.Idea: Car engine timing belts: I was worried about finding "double-sided" belts to have traction, BUT what if: The drive system has the belt do a "serpentine" path at the drive point,so the belt has a wrap of the toothed side against a drive pulley??(May be a problem in mud!) I will try to hit a couple of shops for removed/replaced timing belts...Same MIGHT work for conventional engine timing chains if only you couldunlink to turn inside out... not flexible like rubber-based belts. CAR PARTS STORE : hello,"colt model 200 -- 4-door" (chrysler) 1989...will NOT start.i've been starting it often but last night the engine did NOT turn...(just a sort of tick-tick-tick sound...)HOWEVER, all the panel lights light up and the sound (humming) when 1turnsthe key occur (all this is normal)of possible note is that the lights (outSide) DO turn on.. (but were NOTleft on)could this be the battery? (just wonder b/c the lights DO go on whetherthe battery needs extra power to start the thing (vs. merely turningon the lights...))ANY AND ALL HELP/ADVICE is greatly appreciated (and hoped for :-)THANKS IN ADVANCE!ps it does NOT sound like the engine's floodedanother question: if any of you experts have a chance: how often (onaverage) do car batteries need to be replaced? It sounds like low voltage in the battery, a connection problem, or astarter problem. The easiest thing to do first is check the battery. If youhave access to a volt meter, check the battery voltage, should be around12-12.5 volts. If it is much lower than that you have a poorly charged ordefective battery. If the car starts by boosting or charging the battery, the likely culprit is the battery. It should be charged & tested if low oncharge before replacing it. This is just the first & easiest thing to check, there are several more things to check if the battery checks ok, such asconnections, excessive current draw etc. The usual life on batteries is from3 years up depending on the quality of battery & the usage it has.
