CAR PARTS SALVAGE : What would an effective, yet inexpensive way to bleed brakes by myself? Ihave one of those mity-vac "one man brake bleeding" vacuum kits, but itdoesn't work. For one thing, the seal between all the adapters they supplyand the bleeder nipple do not make a good seal at all. Air gets in quiteeasily. I can get a pretty good seal just by using the hose by itself, butthen air gets in through the threads of the bleeder screw. The last time Itried this, it was a disaster and I was lucky that my little sister was hometo help me do it the regular 2-person way. This time I may not be so lucky, and I will probably need to bleed all fourcalipers because I plan to replace the master cylinder too. The cheapest wayfor me to do this, is to find a way to use that mity-vac effectively. I justhappen to have a tube of Permatex Thread Sealant with Teflon. The newcalipers are not yet installed in the car, so as an experiment I coated thebleeder screw threads with this stuff. I was able to get a perfect seal andif I plug the caliper inlet hole with my finger, it will hold vacuum. Myconcern is that the thread sealant with teflon feels almost slippery, like alubricant. I am concerned with the future possibility that the bleeder valvemight come loose. Or maybe the brake fluid might act as a solvent on thissealant (I guess I can always check this out myself). CAR PARTS SALVAGE : Should I just go ahead and do it with mity-vac and sealant? Is it likely orunlikely that the bleeder will work itself out over time with that sealant onit? Also, what is bench bleeding the master cylinder, and can that be done withjust one person? When I am replacing calipers and master cylinder, what elsewill I have to bleed? The service manual mentions mounting the mastercylinder, loosening the two outside brake lines, and bleeding it that way. Sounds messy, and any brake fluid splatter will probably be bad for thepaint...-----------== Posted via Deja News, The Discussion Network ==---------- Search, Read, Discuss, or Start Your OwnMighty Vacs stink for this job. There is an outfit that sells a specialbleeder valve that once open will allow fluid out but no air in so 1 man cando this. This it's called speed Bleeder (). This sounded good until I did an AltaVista search of themanufacturer and discovered they only have reservoir caps to fit British andEuropean cars. I forgot to mention my car is an '89 Oldsmobile.-----------== Posted via Deja News, The Discussion Network ==---------- Search, Read, Discuss, or Start Your OwnI have to second PJ here - I had an Eezi-bleed back in the UK and Ifound it to be invaluable in bleeding the brakes... 1) Reduce air pressure in spare to 5-10psi2) Raise car onto axle stands & remove wheels3) Hook eazi bleed up to MC reservoir4) Following correct sequence, open each bleed screw until no bubbles, then tighten again...5) Put wheels back on and lower carGrae____________________________________ ________________________________________ Graeme J Quinn Worthington, Ohio CAR PARTS SALVAGE : From: ()Subject: Re: Brake bleeding questions Newsgroups: Date: 1999/02/06 What do you think about taking a reservoir cap that fits your carfrom a junk yard and converting it? Where there is a will, there is away. It can't be that hard to do.--Did our actions today set the proper example for those we lead?Aim Higher! Bob VailThat's certainly an idea I had considered. However, it seems online salvageyards have the attitude that they can't be bothered for small piddly partslike that. The attitude of the employees at the only local salvage yard thatspecializes in late-model car parts is even worse. Last time I paid them avisit, it was during their lunch hour. All 4 guys were on lunch at the sametime behind the counter. I had to stand there for 10 minutes while they ateTaco Bell and occasionally looked up and glared at me with the "what the f***do you want" look before one of the jackasses says, "whaddya want?" in a notso polite manner. Normally they don't let people into their salvage yard, but they didn't want to put down their lunches so one of the guys told me togo out there and look for it myself. Obviously, they could not be botheredby my simple request for a sun visor for my girlfriend's car. Sad thing isone of their prison work release guys working out in the yard was the mostpolite. When I found a car with a good visor, one of the guys seemed ratherdisgusted as he put down his lunch and went and got it for me. The localsalvage guys don't seem to have any people-skills whatsoever, which makes mefeel incredibly uncomfortable. Not to mention it's located in thehighest-crime area of town.
