CAR PARTS NEW ZEALAND : That tail light is for a 1991 3 series, not a new one :-) The new 3 partsare about $350 - they are much more complicated. I'm just checking retail ona new Kia right now: The caepest is the Rio 1.5 with no options at $19,995.Hmmm... maybe I should start exporting German car parts to the US :-) WithOUr exchange rate being crap, it would be a lot easier :-).............Your experience in New Zealand is the exact opposite of what'sseen here in North America. Japanese & Korean OEM parts are much, much lessexpensive than those from any of the German car companies here in the US.I'm guessing that there are factors where you live that are artificiallyincreasing some of these prices (tariffs?). Maybe we're paying a lot morefor German parts here. I like BMW's and would enjoy having a 3 series forsure, but the maintenance & repair costs for late model BMWs, VWs, Porsches& MBs are much higher here compared to Nissan, Toyota, Honda, Hyundai, etc.

CAR PARTS NEW ZEALAND : Following on the recent thread, I have some very immediate need for advice. First let me summarise...Which brings me to a dilema: should I bring my 1986 Vauxhall Cavalier toNZ?2) Hence -> Will I be able to get parts for the car in NZ? Will serviceengineers know the car?3) Does the price differential in NZ from elsewhere make it worthwhile?...As regular readers of s.c.n-z may know, my wife and I plan to emmigrate(!)as soon as possible. We've had an offer on the house (at last - alot lessthan we hoped for - Thank you Mrs. T.!) so have been taking advice on shipping costs.Currently to ship the car as part of the household contents consignmentwould cost between GBP800 - GBP1,000. Since the car is worth @GBP2,000that leaves me with a dilema. Would it be better to sell the car here Gidday Chris, Answers of dubious quality to your questions... Cars with Vauxhall on them in New Zealand are 99.9% over 10 years old, I was suprised last year to discover they were still in business! However, I know that a lot of seemingly different models today have interchangableparts, and we certainly do have Opels here (I thought they were Toyota?). Car prices have come down a lot recently, with the market being flooded withcheap second-hand cars from Japan that the AA generally won't touch. My girlfriend got a 1986 Nissan Sunny last year, non-import, 1300cc, 4-door, mags, in excellent condition for NZ$8000, so prices don't seem too way off. As far as I know, the emmission restrictions aren't anything to worryabout. Unleaded petrol is being heavily promoted, yet govt subsidies on CNGwere cut ages ago (so much for caring for the air). I think the best bet would be to sell your car, and shop around whenyou get here. There's a huge private-sale network in the big centers, and theAA and similar that do car checks. Look at it as a good chance to trade up!

CAR PARTS NEW ZEALAND : There is a General Motors network for Vauxhall/Opel/Holden/Isuzu here. The latter being the major GM subsiduaries in this part of the world. There is I think a Holden model which is very similar (just like there isequivalent Opel model). There will be regional differences though so theanswer is really no. The parts availability may also be pretty iffy.Parts for unusual European cars can be rather expensive (I know I have sucha car). OK it is going to cost you nearly 1,000 quid to transport it. Remember there are hidden wharfage costs on top of that. It will need to be steamcleaned (and all the rust falls off at this stage leaving a new super lightweight model). Then there will be import duty, Registration, warrantof fitness (MOT cert) etc. etc. The rate of duty alters almost daily - check with New Zealand house for details. It also depends on your immigrant status (i.e. have you done all the relevant paper work first). In that you may be exempt from duty on the vehicle if you've done certain things. Again check with New Zealand house. It helps if you have owned the vehicle for more than 2 years.

CAR PARTS NEW ZEALAND : So it may cost you nearly the value of the car (in GBP) to transport it here. Also it is goint to take it a good 3 months to arrive (All that time in a salty atmosphere rutsing away even more). So you will either have to spendyou last couple of months in the U.K. without a car or your first couple here. Both of these being periods of time when a vehicle is more essentialthan normal.I would say that unless you have a compelling reason to keep the car thenyou would be better off getting a car here. You can get a quite reasonablesecond hand car here for 10,000 dollars (the equivalent of the 3000+GBP landed value of your vehicle). You can get a vehicle professionally checked by the AA for about $90 ( as opposed to 100+GBP for equivalent service in U.K.) so this is worthwhile.

CAR PARTS NEW ZEALAND : Bring the car anyway. I emigrated five years ago and left two cars behind - a three year old Cortina and a six month old Citroen 2CV. We sold 'em for a few grand and could only buy a single clapped out Jap heap with the proceeds when we got here. Things have got much better, but New Zealand roads are full of cars considered too dangerous to be sold in Japan.Well, cars have got a lot cheaper here in the last five years. As for Jap imports being considered too dangerous to be sold in Japan? No way!The reason that we can get second-hand Japanese cars cheaply isbecause their system is set up to encourage buying new cars. This isdone through increasingly expensive 'roadworthiness checks'. We don'tget the cars that fail - we get the cars that it isn't worth to checkbecause the fee is so high!
