CAR PARTS CANADA : Any vehicle (except a bus) that is at least 15 years old at the timeof importation -- based on the month and year of manufacture shownon the certification plate or sticker -- is exempt from TransportCanada's vehicle requirements (bumpers, seat belt design, etc.).It would appear that Transport Canada's vehicle importation pages werelast revised in June 2000 -- meaning that they have not been updatedto reflect the fact that '85 vehicles are now exempt from the regularrequirements under the "15 years old or older" escape clause.I would be amazed if you did not have to do this -- though you shouldcheck with the BC motor vehicle people, just to be absolutely sure.As I recall, imported vehicles with air conditioning are subject toan addition C$100 excise tax. If you are immigrating to Canada forthe first time, however, there is a special customs exemption for"settlers' effects", and it's my understanding that the A/C tax iswaived in such cases.
CAR PARTS CANADA : In any case, before importing such an old car, you should considerwhether it will be feasible to maintain it in Canada. It is quitelikely that the Subaru dealers near your new Canadian home may nothave ready access to the correct parts lists for your car -- so ifsomething needs to be repaired (or just replaced as part of periodicmaintenance), it may be a major hassle identifying the exact partnumber and getting the correct part. When I lived in Canada (from1993 to 1997), I often had to jump through extra hoops to keep my'84 Honda Accord properly maintaned; sometimes I ended up phoninga Honda dealership in the States, getting a part number from them, and then having my local (Canadian) Honda dealer special-order thepart. If the American dealership gave me the wrong part number, ofcourse, I was the one left holding the bag (no refunds on specialorders, no one else prepared to accept the blame, etc.). Sounds like it still might be worth importing my car, if all I have to fix is the windshield. Thats interesting your comment about it being hard to get parts. A bit weird. In the states there's no problem getting parts. To be honest seems like Americans are far more competent at looking after their cars and keeping them going. When I came to the US I thought old cars were pricey here compared to the UK, then I saw Canada's prices. There's people asking $1500 for an '85 Nissan Micra. that would cost 100 quid back in the UK! Add to that having trouble finding parts. Now I'm even more worried about the transit strike! :-) CAR PARTS CANADA : If you live in the US -- and if you have a car that was built for, andsold in, the US -- then the service and parts people at your localdealership are all set up with the parts lists, service manuals, etc.for your car.Similarly if you live in Canada and your car is a Canadian model.BUT . . . if you live in Canada, and your car was built for and orig-inally sold in the US, then your local dealership might NOT have readyaccess to the parts lists and service manuals for your car, becauseyou've got a "weird" foreign model that they never sold and may neverhave even seen before. When I lived in Ontario with my (US-model) '84 Honda Accord, I wouldconstantly run into problems whenever I needed to buy a replacementor maintenance part at a nearby Honda dealer (things like distributorcaps/rotors, fuel filters, and the like). The computerized partscatalogue in the parts department listed ONLY the parts for CANADIANHonda models. And, in my case, this was a major issue, because the'84 Honda Accord sold in Canada was a very different car from what Ihad (smaller engine, no emissions controls, etc.). The only way Icould be sure I was getting the right part was to phone a Honda dealerin the US, describe what I needed to their parts department, get thepart number, and then go back to my local Honda dealer, where theywould either sell me the part (if they happened to have that exactpart number), or else they'd special-order the part for me. CAR PARTS CANADA : Now, what I've described here might not necessarily be true for allcars. I suspect that the US and Canadian versions of many newer cars(especially cars built in North America) may be virtually identical. But for a mid-80's Japanese car, I wouldn't bet on it.Rich Wales *NOTE: I've lived in both Canada and the US and have dual citizenship.*DISCLAIMER: I am not a lawyer, professional immigration consultant, or consular officer. My comments are for discussion purposes only and are not intended to be relied upon as legal or professional advice.Ok, now I understand what you mean. Thats an interesting point. I am optimistic about Subaru however as they always made less models and didn't change parts often, as opposed to Honda, which are notorious even within the US for being expensive to fix because every year they changed a load of things. But I shall do some research perhaps.... Thanks again.
