CAR PARTS : I am now planning to sell the real estate. I need the car partsremoved *now*. I have contacted the "friend" and he continues tooffer excuses and postponements until it is more convenient for him.I am tired of waiting, not to mention that waiting would delay thesale of my property. I'd like this to end as quickly as possible --regardless of the convenience of the "friend".What are my options? A collector has expressed an interest in theparts and has offered to take them away. Am I within my rights toallow the collector to haul it away? If not, then what other optionsdo I have?You can compromise, somewhat:Remove the pieces and put them in one of those temporary storage places. Send your friend a certified letter (with return receipt that indicates it was received - hang on to the receipt) letter stating that the articles that you have requested that he remove have been removed as per your previous discussions, and he now must pay you for each month of storage in order to retrieve the articles. Further state that he has (30, 60, 90) days to arrange for retaking possession of the items or they will be considered "abandoned", then sell them to the collector and pay off any remaining balance for the storage unit - give the rest of the money for the parts to your friend if you want to preserve the friendship (and be sure to explain that you had little choice but to remove the articles and could not afford to carry the cost of his storage unit for him).
CAR PARTS : But, you might want to discuss the ramifications with the attorney you hire for your real estate sale (yes, you should have one that's working just for you).Putting the junk in a storage facility is going to put you on the hookfor the fees, not your friend.1. Send him a certified letter stating that he has X number of days toremove the junk from your premises or you will seek legal remedies.2. At the end of the time period, see an attorney to find out exactlywhat you have to do to avoid any cause of action against you in yourendeavor to rid yourself of your friend's junk.Compromise? Not with this "friend." You have to play hardball with thisguy.To be on the safe side, I would notify him in writing, delivered in person or bycertified mail, return receipt, that unless the parts are removed by [reasonabledate in the future], I would consider the parts as having been abandoned and Iwould dispose of them as I see fit.
CAR PARTS : DRUGGIE 'CAR' TROUBLE By JOHN LEHMANN and JOE McGURK SMUGGLER'S SCAM:Manhattan U.S. Attorney James Comey talks about how feds nabbed Bronx"ecstasy" smugglers who hid pills in heavy-duty car parts.- NYP: Michael Norcia November 6, 2002 -- A Bronx-based Dominican drug ring used heavy-duty auto parts and aRembrandt print to smuggle up to 100,000 "ecstasy" pills into New Yorkfrom the Netherlands - but the "ingenious" scheme fell apart after onlysix months, the feds said yesterday. Twenty accused smugglers were busted after 16,000 pills were foundwelded inside a torque-converter engine part posted to Brothers AutoWorld repair shop at 1361 Bruckner Blvd. in The Bronx, Manhattan U.S.Attorney James Comey said. Another 21,000 pills were allegedly concealed inside a Rembrandtreproduction seized at JFK Airport, while Dutch cops and U.S. Customsofficers found another 53,450 pills inside other torque converters.
CAR PARTS : Accused drug lord Jos?"J.J." Torres - who allegedly headed anoperation that tried to import pills with a street value of $2 million -was heard on surveillance tapes last May being promised by his Dutchpartner that he would become a millionaire, court papers said. The 40-year-old Bronx man, who also used one of his apartments at 1915Morris St. to store pills, was behind bars yesterday - one of 11Dominicans arrested in New York through the Drug Enforcement Agency'sOperation Tradewinds investigation. The mother of his 4-year-old daughter, Ana Matos, 28, was also arrestedon two drug importation charges. Comey said the smuggling racket was the first evidence that Dominicandrug lords were branching out from heroin and cocaine importation tomake big dollars from Dutch-produced ecstasy.
CAR PARTS : "This is a tidal wave that the parents of America need to recognize" hesaid. The drug offers big profits to drug lords - pills that sell for $20 to$25 a pop in Manhattan clubs are made in Dutch drug labs for $1 a pilland sold to the traffickers for about $4, DEA agents said. In three years, the use of ecstasy - which can cause brain damage - hasjumped 71 percent among 12- to 18-year-old Americans, Comey said. The Bronx-based ring shipped car parts to their Dutch partners, whowould fill the part with the pills, weld it shut and return it,pretending that the part had been faulty, the feds said. Comey said the smugglers had gone to "extraordinary lengths" anddescribed their concealment methods as "ingenious." Buddy Pizzaro, the superintendent of the apartment building where Torresand his girlfriend lived for three years, said he was "surprised" by thearrests because they seemed like decent people. The owner of Brothers Auto World, Pablo Mendoza, said he knew nothingabout the drug ring.
