Get the real factory manualif you can find it.I love the Clymer manuals, but the one for my old motorcycle devoted half apage to a cutaway drawing (labeled, of course) of a spark plug and two pagesto the exploded drawing of the whole engine. CAR PART STORES : I have always looked at repair manual, I prefer Haynes, becuase theyhave more pictures(detailed). I know how to change my oil, check sparkplugs, check belts, and hoses, and know what to look for in wiring whenI suspect there is a problem (basic lights and under hood type wiring).Beyond that I am at a complete loss. At least with a manual, I have anidea what problem area I am dealing with. Also an area with a large highschool may have a voc school, and they will look at your vehicle. Youcan call any vocational school, and they may have a class that will besuited to you. We had one just for women, in NY, and it was reallygreat, a few hours a week for 4 weeks, and they had all types ofvehicles, including construction and farm vehicles, we got to get ourhands dirty on everything!! The basics are the same, and we got to seehow things are set up in large and small engines. While some classes arereally just the basics, a little knowledge is better than none. And theywill be more helpful problem solving if you have a specific problem, espif you can bring the problem to class!!

First, the car manufacturers come outwith something like Torx head fasteners. Fo a while, only themechanics at the dealerships have the right wrenches. After a while,Torx wrenches are generally available from tool makers and smallershops and do-it-yourselfers can tool up. So then, the manufacturersstart using fasteners with Torx heads, only with a little raised nibin the center, that require a matching dimple in the wrench. Repeatthe cycle...

It ain't only the Americans who do stupid stuff.Well, if we'd actually done that to our PieceOfShit Caddy, it probablywouldn't have blown that rod out through the pan. Couldn't get to thevalves, either. I strongly agree that the factory manual and Haynes and Chiltons areall worth having. Sometimes you need a picture, sometimes a diagram. There aren't many maint courses because auto maint has gotten prettyeasy. Fuel Injection and the other computers aren't anything a 'shadetree mechanic' can deal with. There simply isn't enuff left to fill acourse.
