CAR ENGINE PARTS : Cleaned all surfaces thoroughly, replaced head gasket and head, tightened everything correctly, let any silicone set up overnight.Next morning. Started the car and was greeted with nasty "tick-tick"from what sounds like somewhere in the valve train on that side. Ugh. Goes down in volume until barely audible at idle, and at blip inthrottle comes back loudly, "cack-cack-cack". Brings neighbors out ofapartments.Blue smoke STILL a problem, and in fact after five minutes developsinto constant plumes of thick blue smoke worse than ever. Bringsneighbors out of apartments.Anyone have any more suggestions? Cracked head? Cracked valvestem(s)? Did my removing and retorquing the head make any cracksworse?Car still runs like a champ, just valvetrain noisy and nasty hugeplumes of smoke now. I'm still looking at a teardown and rebuild, though apparently not related to any blown head gaskets now, so I'mpleased about that.

CAR ENGINE PARTS : Wild-ass guess: Stuck ring, worn over time to the shape of the cylinder, withthe ring offset to one side, the piston to the other. Now that the ring is free,it receded back into the piston groove, leaving a huge gap where the worn part of the ring is, letting all the oil out.The very first thing I said was that you need to completely rebuild. I amafraid the same is still true, Sorry for the bad news, and for the wastedtime and money. When you soaked your pistons you did that in the vehicle from yourdescription. You could be burning off the chemicals used to clean thepistons. Did you change e your oil after you did the work. The chemicalsyou used on the pistons would have gone through the rings and are nowcontaminating your oil. These things may make it smoke more than usual fora little bit.

CAR ENGINE PARTS : Also if the carbon build up was that much to prevent the movement of thepiston from side to side your pistons are probably scored to death, alongwith your rings, and your cylinders probably out of round. As for the noise, I guess you need to pull apart that side with the noiseand check what went wrong, However, why bother since you need to redo theentire engine anyway. It makes no sense to do half a job expecting the results of a whole job. Iknow funds are low, but that does not change what needs to be done. With all respect...much like a trip to the doctor - I've merely lookedfor further opinions and options. Your response has not been the onlyresponse, and I understandably hesitate to rip into an engine withoutexhausting ALL options.

CAR ENGINE PARTS : I never expected the results of a whole job - Did I give thatimpression somewhere in my post? As I said, "just for kicks." Whathave I got to lose? A couple free hours spent tinkering with my car,and learning at the same time, nonetheless? I was never under theimpression that a lack of funds would change what needed to be done.I agree with the idea that if your using this engine for learning on, youare going to spend more money than if you know what your doing. But frankly you are teaching yourself completely wrong. No mechanicworth shit would pull heads off the engine, find what you found, and startpouring cleaners and solvents into the cylinders, then bolt everything backtogether. And did you even bother using a new head gasket? An engine is a precision machine, not your Grandpa's Briggs & Stratton.

CAR ENGINE PARTS : And as far as being hesitant to rip into an engine? Are you evencontemplatingdoing an engine rebuild in your garage? From an economic standpoint fromthe sounds of it your going to have to spend at least 1-2 thousand intoolingthat you don't have. By the time you get this engine rebuilt your going tohavespent 3 times what it would have cost to pull the engine out and haul itdownto a rebuilder and have them do it. And in all liklihood your going to makeamistake and the engine will blowup. If you really want to learn you need to start with some small jobs first andcomplete them, then graduate to larger jobs. And you need to know yourlimits too and when it's time to outsource the job.For example, I have done several engine swaps, tranny swaps, and lots oftroubleshooting on my vehicles over the years. I have a heated garage witha cherry picker and crane, air compressor, and several shelves of tools.I'vealso done rebuilds on smaller engines. I know HOW to do the rebuild andgiven enough time and money I would be able to do a rebuild on a car engine.Yet I would not do a car engine - and you know why? It's because I knowenough to know that to do it right meanshaving all the castings checked for cracks, hot & cold tanking theappropriateparts, and a fair bit of milling and machining. Plus you need anothershelf of precision measurement tools, and you need to have those toolscalibrated. In short, you need a commercial machine shop.
