Dealers love to sell you on low monthly payments then make up for it on length of loan. $200/month is not good when you're still making those payments five years from now. If you can arrange your loan from your bank or credit union it can make the buying process easier as dealers make money on loans and can be a little shifty on those matters. Being able to say "I've got financing on my own, I'm only concerned with the best purchase price" can make things easier. Of course you can let them try to beat your loan rate. I always tell them my loan is a few % less than it really is so if the beat it it really is a better deal.

Although I do not believe there is an actual link between the two.As an automobile designer I understand (but do not always agree) withhow certain attributes on a given car are designed.There is no direct correlation between the two characteristics. Bothcharacteristics (tire life and engine performance) are symptoms of the samecommon factor. Was it designed by bean counters (the Vega was a classic example)or was it designed by car guys? For example, Ford had started a program of eliminating all their lowperformance engines with average performance 70 Hp/liter engines. But underJacque Nasser, that program was halted or seriously degraded. Therefore Fordreliability dropped from about industry average down to GM's reliability. Again,there is no direct correlation with reliability and engine performance, but theyare both symptoms of a common factor - that problem in this case being JacqueNasser.
