AUTO SPARES : Horst Link of Sonor and his son Oliver used to visit Australia and inviteall the Sonor players to lunch in a ritzy restaurant. He had great rapportwith the players and the follow up that we all got on spare parts, dueperhaps to the schematic layout of their catalogue and the specialization ofthe village where the factory is ( was ? ) located that every person in thatvillage was employed by Sonor to make drums. It is difficult for me toimagine malcontented Sonor players and I don't know if I am getting thisright but there seems to be a number in RRMP who have almost given Sonor thestatus that Volvo owners have over here. (That is disliked because theydrive in a predictable fashion knowing that their car has exceptional safetyfeatures while they are oblivious to anyone else's safety ).
AUTO SPARES : I 'm perplexed that a once mighty drum company can just fade with scarcely atrace.Now I am probably in for a greater shock suggesting that you might find theright screws in a european auto spares store. You Americans probably havetarrifs that protect your local auto manufacturers from competitiveoutsiders. The plot thickens !Thanks for the response. I'm not sure what year catralogue you have, but Ibelieve this kit to be a '93 or so. I had originally thought it to be a '95,but was told that Hilites were discontinued after '93. I've checked autodealers, hardware stores...to no avail.As far as Sonor's factory goes...if they've sold or closed it, I surehaven't heard about it. There are quite a few Sonor players here on RMMP,and I've seen nothing posted to that effect.Call Atlanta Pro Percussion (800) USA DRUM and ask for Cary. He was able tofind some obscure Sonor spares for me and I had them within a week.
AUTO SPARES : The Links sold out to Hohner in 1990 and stayed on in an advisory position.I assume they got completely out a couple years later after Mapex bought apiece of the company. As far as the USA having high tarrifs, that's not the case, it's more thatthe American consumer is more interested in cheap than good. Also that theaverage music store won't make the effort help us get parts - they'd rathersell us the shiny new set of TKO's they've had on the floor for the last 6months.So what exactly was Hohner's relationship to Sonor in the 70's? Were theyjust US Distributors? I know that around the mid 70's the Charles Alden Co.acted as the US distributor but I'm not sure if Hohner played any kind of arole at that time. Is Hohner an American or German Co.?I'm not sure if its a fact or just a perception that some share,but it seemsas if Sonor is fading from the music scene.ED W
AUTO SPARES : My 1969 catalog lists Hohner as the US distributor. My mid 70's catalogslist Charles Alden as the US Distributor. My late 80's catalogs list Korgas the US distributor. 1990 and after lists Hohner as the parentcorporation of Sonor.Keep in mind that most small drum companies needed to sign with a largermusic distributor. It was much cheaper than hiring reps & opening officesin every Westernized country in the world. Ask Mike Carter...Hohner is a German company. As far as fading from the scene? I think it'sthe opposite - they've refocused on low end Chinese crap to build marketshare. Their advertising budget seems to be about the same as it alwayswas: meager, so you only see a few ads from time to time. But I've seenmore Sonor in music stores in the past couple years than I ever have. It's2001 quality as opposed to Sonorlite/Signature quality.
