AUTO PARTS FOR CARS : ``It's a shrinking market, so players are looking to grab a larger share ofit,'' said Art Spinella, president of CNW Marketing Research, an independentresearch company.Cost savings can be significant, said Alfred Gaspar, president of AutomotiveAftermarket Industry Association, a not-for-profit trade organization.Advance Auto said it expects to save $30 million a year in costs byconsolidating distribution and purchasing operations.Rapid consolidation in the industry over the last decade has already leftfewer players controlling a larger market share, forcing out independentretailers or ``jobbers,'' as they are called, said Jim Lang, President, LangMarketing, an aftermarket research firm.After Advance Auto completes its purchase of Discount Auto Parts, forexample, the company will operate 2,420 stores in 38 states. Only No. 1retailer AutoZone Inc. (NYSE:AZO - news) has a larger presence, with 3,000stores.
AUTO PARTS FOR CARS : The Top 5 retail chains now control about 35 percent of the DIY market, hesaid, which has gone up from just over 20 percent in the past 10 years.``They have more outlets now, and the number of jobbers has dropped by athird from the mid-80's to today,'' he said. In just the last couple ofyears, the number of jobbers fell by 7 percent, to just over 20,000, headded.Larger chains are being forced to change the way they do business because ofimprovements in vehicle technology and higher quality parts and components.Interest is also waning in the DIY segment, which accounts for almost 85percent of the revenues of major retail chains.``Cars are becoming increasingly sophisticated, and fewer people are doingtheir own repairs and maintenance,'' said Spinella.
AUTO PARTS FOR CARS : Aftermarket retailers are also blaming car manufacturers and the changingconsumer demographic for the slowdown in sales of parts.In 2000, sales in the retail automotive aftermarket totaled $168 billion, upby just 5.8 percent from the previous year. This year, sales are expected togrow by less than 4 percent, to $175 billion, according to AAIA.``Car manufacturers are making it difficult to diagnose what is wrong withthe car,'' said Gaspar. The new Ford Taurus, he said, has more computersthan an Apollo spacecraft.Manufacturers are training the customer just to ``turn the red light on thedashboard off,'' when something is wrong, but the independent jobber or theDIY retailer does not have that information, he said.Auto parts retailers and wholesalers are also worried about a new U.S.Environmental Protection Agency requirement that cars be fitted withhigh-tech on-board diagnostics systems, because some vehicle manufacturersare not providing the information needed to service and repair parts, Gasparsaid.
AUTO PARTS FOR CARS : Historic Can-Ams will roar at The Baxter Auto Parts Portland HistoricRaces.PORTLAND, Ore - June 28, 2002 - The great historic Can-Am cars of theoriginal 1966 through 1974 Canadian American Challenge Cup Series willrace once again at the Baxter Auto Parts Portland Historic Races atPortland International Raceway July 12, 13 and 14. The Victory Lane Historic Can-Am Feature will highlight 18 cars at thePortland event, ranging from a Burnett MKII to a Ferrari 312P to fourdifferent types of Lola Ts, three different McLarens, a Porsche 917/30and a Shadow. The Can-Am cars will be on display in the paddockthroughout the weekend, and on the track two times each day.These exciting racecars of up to 1500 horsepower were from an era when"excess was barely adequate." Can-Am cars were the fastest cars in theworld in their time, faster than Indy cars or Formula One. The cars wereunlimited in concept and design, and the series featured virtually norules.
AUTO PARTS FOR CARS : The cars are part of the Historic Can-Am Association (HCAA), which wasformed in 1987 to bring historic Can-Am and the great unlimited sportsracing cars of that series back to North American road racing circuits. HCAA maintains a registry of cars, crew, drivers and participantsinvolved in the original Can-Am series as well as current historic carsand owners. The Baxter Auto Parts Portland Historic Races features fun for the entirefamily with high-speed racing by more than 200 vintage and historic carsfrom the early 1930s to the 1970s. Special guest celebrity Ernie Irvanof NASCAR fame will sign autographs on the Saturday and Sunday of therace. The event also presents more than 700 collector and specialty carson display; a hot rod show; a vendor midway; an upscale food and winepavilion; and a family zone.
