ANTIQUE CAR PARTS : That's where most of my family is from, and I have similar sensibilities. I might try once in a while to talk someone down on price (cuz I *do* live in NY, yanno :-), but overall, I find it pretty yucky if I'm *expected* to haggle. I find the whole thing very unpleasant.A friend of the family sells *really* hard to find antique car parts (as well as antique cars....and all kinds of nifty things). This guy from NY drove up cuz he got wind that this friend had a certain car part that he'd been looking for for *years* to finish restoring an antique car. Well, the guy drove up asking if he had the part and our friend went in the back and got him one (in the original box, even!). A soon as he came out with the part, the guy asked how much. He was quoted an *amazingly* reasonable price (I think it was under $20.......and this is a part that couldn't be found *anywhere*). The guy immediately started trying to talk him down to $10 (or something....I can't remember the exact numbers). Ray listened for a few seconds and dropped the part on the ground. Then he stepped on it and broke it. He turned to the guy and said "Ok....there ya go. That's the $10 version." ANTIQUE CAR PARTS : Im wondering if anyone drives their antique car every day with good results.Ive heard of people driving their Model T's to work every day(in nice weather). I would also like to know how those rope/grease bushings hold up over the long run.Dennis SelwaI drive a Model A Ford Pickup everyday all year round.I put on about 10,000 a year and it is one of the few cars partsare still available for brand new. Model As are a Rolls Roycecompared to a Model T.Regards;Talbot V. Ridgway Irvington Booknook2825 N.E. 16th AVE. Newsgroups: Date: 1998/05/09 I have been driving a 48 ford every day for the last three years. After thefirst week of use someone pulled out in front of me, and I quickly learned thatthe old braking systems weren't as good as the other drivers expected them tobe. I didn't hit him, but I put a modern Disk/Drum brake system on the stockaxles the next week. I don't know how old an antique you are talking about but if you are planningto drive a "T", you had better stay out of traffic. It won't accelerate or brakewell enough to mix with modern vehicle's. A resto-Rod is the only way to go ifyou really want everyday use from a pre 50's car. ANTIQUE CAR PARTS : A Model T has insufficient braking for modern traffic. (my opinion). Lotsof cars from the 60s and early 70s are in daily use in Vancouver--ourfamily uses a 70 Cutlass and a 72 Buick for daily drivers, and I'd hazarda guess that we have fewer problems than many drivers of new technologysuffer. The emission test seems to be a cinch for these older vehicles, and thecops only seem to haul the really bad looking ones over for the "safety"inspection game. (The inspector tries to find enough "problems" so thatrepairs exceed the value of the vehicle, thus forcing it off the road.)Parts don't seem to be a prblem, as specialty suppliers plus the localwrecking yards always seem able to provide what little we need.I've been driving a '49 Packard Golden Anniversary edition sedan regularly since1975 (not just in good weather, or good roads for that matter). I live in SEWashington and aside from running around the Pacific Northwest have taken trips toSouthern Nevada and Eastern Montana with it. It's the most comfortable car I'veever owned. It's been very reliable -- it just won't quit. ANTIQUE CAR PARTS : I just got back from a 1500+ mile trip in my 55 Chevy hot rod...blown 454 engine....no problems at all.I don't drive it every day, as I have 3 other old vehicles I have to take turns. At one time (during the 80's) I had a 1959 Studebaker Lark which I droveeverywhere every day. People used to tell me things like, "You can't getparts for those old cars !!!!". Well, I was getting them on my own, no thanksto them.I also had a 1967 Lincoln Continental. Certain parts for that car were verydifficult to obtain. The exhaust, for example, could be custom made at manylocal muffler shops. I had the transmission rebuilt on that car. When it cametime for the front brakes, I was able to get everything but the pair offront-brake-flex hoses.I found an ad in the phone book for Vintage Auto Parts in the state ofWashington. (This appeared in my local Cleveland Ohio phone book). Only thisplace had them, and no one else could supply them. Vintage charged around $200for the pair of hoses. Now during the past 6 or 7 years I've been driving a 1970 Chevy Nova. I havenot had any problem with parts on that car. I specifically purchased the carbecause I understood that parts for old Chevys are readily available. I justsold that car after purchasing a 1993 GMC Safari Van.I did have a bad experience when I purchased a 1961 Chevy Pickup Truck. Icouldn't even buy a shop manual for it. The Public Library was able to help meout with some similar-year manuals. I did have some bad experiences in thelocal auto parts stores when I went for tune-up parts. I kept hearing thingslike, "Our books don't go back that far". Somewhere else I heard, "You have aWHAT? A '61??? A '61??? !!!" (Yeah you dummy, I have a '61.) I ownedthat truck for two weeks and used it as trade towards my '93 Safari.I'm tired. I like old cars, but you just keep sinking money into your oldmachinery. Then if you try to sell it, you never get a satisfactory amount. It's always a loss for you, but a great learning experience, though.Dale
