Jag(it would dart all over the road), you ire (make you mad as blazes with thebills, the poor dependability, and the rust.) Trying to get one through MOTwas a royal pain.Now that F*O*R*D, an American Company, has taken over, I guess the Jag hasimproved, according to you.I know American cars are poor sellers outside the US. They can't affordthem. A $20,000 American car is easily double and maybe more in manycountries. For many years through the '80s and '90s, Chevrolet Suburbanswere one of the most stolen vehicles in the South Florida area. Why? Tostick on a boat and send overseas. The Suburban was so far out of reach inprice overseas that it was cheaper to steal and transport than to buy onethere. And there were a lot of people here who could sell one for big bucksthere if they got it here.
AMERICAN CAR SPARES : But it isn't because no one wants them. All you have to do is watch CNN orany other news station and see the number of big old American cars cruisingaround in other countries. Some of them are older than me. Obviously, whenone gets purchased there, they care for them forever to keep them aroundforever. And with gas mileage one-fourth most European small cars, therehas to be a real sacrifice on the owner's part to keep and drive one, butyet they do. And insurance. Heck, an average American sedan in Europeinsures for more than one of Europe's more exotic over here. When someoneruns down to buy a Vauxhall, they don't figure they have to go to a secondmortgage to get it. But to buy, insure, and operate an American car, theyhave to pay through the nose, and yet, they do.
AMERICAN CAR SPARES : Can one ship a car to Britain or Ireland by air? I may be staying a yearand am thinking of just bringing old Betsy along instead a trying torent, lease, or buy over there. Is this outlandishly expensive? I've gota full-size capitalist automoblile....If you can book five seats in an exit row, then negotiate that hard right turn just inside the fron passenger door and not catch your bumper on hanging baggage in the closet, you could probably get it aboard, but can it mange the 7-8 hours without smoking.Hmmm...A full sized capitalist automobile mated to a pint sized brain from a place called rain (out in which he seems to have been left too long), capable of producing mutant offspring which would shock even our Anglican cousins. AMERICAN CAR SPARES : Outlandish hardly describes the cost, plus you would have to drive in reverse all the time to keep the driver on the right (left) side. If the roundabouts don't get you, them lorries would (plus having to put an eyepatch on your left eye to force yourself to check your 3 oclock at every intersection. Over there, they not only don't know where they are going, they are not sure from whence they are coming, therefore blindsiding Americans frequently)It would be terrible, since most people liek to stick the exhaust pipe uptheir mouth and turn the key.What can be done (much more economically) is to go to one of the numerousservices that specialize in shipping cars. Drive the car up to them paythem a fee and give them the appropriate documents. They put the car in acar-sized box, and 6 or so weeks later it appears on the docks somewhere. The cost isn't so bad. How do you think all those American cars withAmerican plats end up in Europe. Giveit a thought before shipping your 7.0L Cadillac !!You get used to driving a LHD car fairly quickly and the supply of sparesreally isn't that much of a problem, though finding someone to work on the carcould well be. There are only a few garages with the diagnosic kit needed formodern American autos around. If you are going to Ireland then remember thatthey have quite a few small country roads and they could be a problem in a fullsized car.
