ACURA CAR PARTS : I have been doing a little car shoppping recently and was at the acura dealerand the Integra really caught my eye. DOes the Integra have a very good record? If anyone here has one and has anything bad/good to say about them (or evenif you have just test driven one) I'd like to hear of it. Also, how are theyon insurance? Are they considered Sports Cars? When I looked in the ConsumerReports magazine the Integra was located under the compact cars, not sport carsso I was curious. Thanks in advance on any info you have. From: ()Subject: Re: Need info/opinions on Acura Integra. Resale value is also high. The only reason not to buy one is that it is about tobe supercededby a new model - howver this does mean that you can get good dealson 93's.
ACURA CAR PARTS : I owned a 90 model for 3 years until recently. Insurance cost me about$500/yr full coverage, I now have a Miata that costs $50/yr more. I think the Integra is a very reasonable and practical sporty car,but not a sports car - it just doesn't have sufficiently good handling.Brakes are exceptional, straight line speed good. I autocrossed thecar for 2 years and it did pretty well comapred to Proteges, Jetta'sCRX's and others in the same class. It has more space than any ofits competitors (Celica, 240SX, Eclipse etc.). IMHO the standoutIntegra is the base model, which is mechnaically identical tothe GS/LS but at a lower price. It compares very favorablyperformance wise with similar cars, the higher price modelsare not so attractive performance wise as Probe GT's, Turbo Eclipse'setc. will have any Integra for lunch. ACURA CAR PARTS : I bought a new Integra LS in '88. I probably will not buy another. Handling is not as good as my previous car (79' VW Scirocco). On wet orsnowy roads, the road grip is horrible. So bad I don't go out unless I reallymust - the car can skid so eaily. Part of this is the shitty tires thatAcura shipped the car with (Michelin MXV), but even with better tires, thehandling is not that great (according to friends who have the same car withdifferent tires). From day one, the car has had a problem with erratic throttle response.Sometimes the engine will go into a stall/surge condition, especially whencold. This has been reported by other owners of '88 Integras, althoughAcura refuses to acknowledge a problem. On a slick road, the combinationof poor traction and a sudden surge can cause the car to break loose andgo sideways at any given moment. That's why I am scared to drive thedamn thing in bad weather. The salesman who sold me the car did his bestto hide the problem from me - he refused to let me drive the demo untilhe had driven it himself and was confident the car was not surging. Thesame thing happened when I demanded to drive my car before signing thedelivery papers. I will never buy another car without having a chance todrive it from cold start. ACURA CAR PARTS : The clutch on my car had to be replaced at about 27k miles. I havedriven manual trannies for 26 years, I do not abuse clutches, and I havenever had to replace one before. My previous cars did not need clutchesafter 60 to 80k of my driving. The local Acura dealer now tells me that I need a new water pump and timingbelt, at 35k miles. He wants about $600 for the replacement of these parts.I recently replaced the rear muffler for $400. I was also told that I neednew struts and brakes, but I am going for second opinions on that.It look like Acura is assuming that they are selling a "lifestyle" productand that the owners are willing to pay premium prices for parts andmaintenance. I checked around and found that prices for equivalent partsand services on comparable cars (eg., Honda, VW) were often 30-40% less.I asked the Acura service manager about this and he acknowledged that therewas "padding" in their prices. He said that the Acura customers liked tosee the service staff in clean shirts and ties, and that the prices werehigh so they could have flowers and donuts in the waiting room, etc. ACURA CAR PARTS : What this means to me, is that even though my Acura may hold resale valuebetter than some other cars, it may still cost more to own. If reliabilityis poor, and parts and insurance cost more than the other brands, I lose. The recent Integras may be better cars than my '88, but anybody consideringone should try to see through the mystique that Acura tries to cultivatefor their products. They are just cars, Acura is just another brand,up to the same tricks as the other companies, and the mystique-buildingis just a way of getting people to accept their higher prices.Well, the Scirocco was a different kind of car. Very little power comparedto the Integra, but much lighter.MXV's suck in any but dry conditions. But with 35k miles on the caryou must be onto your second set by now - and its your fault ifyou bought them again. A509's would be a good choice among many others.
